Acoustic Night @ the Verhovay 10/08/2008

by John 10/9/2008 4:30:00 PM

Well, last night was another open mic/acoustic night.  Mothers Acoustic Blend opened up, and played for about an hour.  Mike came out with the upright bass and dobro, Mac and Al came out and played some guitar, and me...after the MAB portion of the evening, I fired up the keyboard add added some electric piano and jazz organ accents!  It was a fun night, as always.  Many thanks to everyone that came out, like John C., Kevin and Maria T., and Bonita, who never did show me that tattoo she was bragging about!!!  Starting in November, we're going to be scaling the open mic nights back to once a month.  We'll be using the off Wednesdays to do more recording, work on some new material, and try to keep things fresh and exciting!  Oh, and it looks like I'll be needing a new acoustic guitar!  I borrowed my friend Scott's Breedlove last night, and it really cleaned up some of the sound issues we've been experiencing.  I really like my Seagull, but the electronics are really sensitive, and in a live setting, it's just really noisy.  Keep an eye out for the MAB MySpace page, which should be coming online soon.  We'll be putting some of our demo recordings up, and it will be a great place to keep up with the bands performance schedule!

Open Mic Recap - 09/24/08

by John 9/25/2008 11:07:00 AM

Well, it was another open mic night at the Verhovay club last night.  It was a slow night.  We did our first set with no major glitches.  As we were finishing the set, we wished one of the patrons (Steph) a happy birthday by playing and singing the traditional “happy birthday song”.   John C. started out the open mic portion of the night.  He did an awesome job on some old Dylan tunes.  We also did a couple of standards.  I even played piano/organ on a couple of songs.  Frank came out and did a great job on a couple of tunes.  The close of the evening saw me dinking around with some old Billy Joel tunes on the piano.  Someday, I’m going to learn to play that thing!

After we packed up and loaded out at the Verhovay, Scott and I stopped up at Nathan’s for their open mic night (which doesn’t really get underway until after 10pm).  I ran in to a couple of friends, and later in the evening Scott and I did a few tunes just because we were there.  I even went out on a limb and did a solo version of Bad Co’s Seagull.  Fortunately, there were no cameras or recording devices!

We would have hung out for a bit afterwards, but it was getting pretty late, and I still needed to get to work in the morning.  Thanks go out to the Verhovay for letting us play, and Brenda the bartender for not letting us go thirsty.  Also, thanks to Nathan’s, along with Glenn and Carl (the open mic hosts) and Meranda, because there “ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone”!

Wednesday, 9/24/08 - Acoustic/Open Mic Night

by John 9/22/2008 10:19:00 PM

This Wednesday, it's open mic night at the Verhovay club.   Pat, Scott, and I are hosting.  It starts at 7pm.  We will play for about an hour, and then open mic starts.  Come sing, play guitar, dance, trumpet, violin, bass (we'll plug your electric bass into the board, so no amps required), pretty much whatever ypu want to play is cool.  Scott Pat and I would be happy to paly/sing along if you want, or just take the stage and show off you chops.  We'll have a keyboard there, mics, PA, so come on out.  Food and adult beverages are reasonably priced, there's no cover, so no excuses not to come out and have fun.
